Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Usually, when it comes to detail sanding, most of us who care about the quality of our work will put the sander down and switch to working by hand. The Ryobi PSD101 cordless belt sander presents an alternative to this, particularly when it comes to sanding in tight spots.

Using 1/2 by 18-inch sandpaper belts, the Ryobi PDS101 cordless belt sander has a unique design that makes it suited for detail work in tight spots. These tools can often appear as mini belt sanders or file sanders. In either case, you get the power of a belt sander with the access and control of a detail sander.

It runs on the brand’s 18V One+ battery platform, with the bare tool sold separately from Ryobi batteries and chargers. Using the P108 4.0Ah battery, Ryobi claims this sander can run continuously for up to 90 minutes.

The Ryobi PDS101 features a variable speed dial on top that lets you tailor your sanding speed to various applications. That lets you run it slower to avoid taking off too much material. It also features a lock-on switch on the left side of the handle. That lets you focus your attention on keeping the sander moving instead of worrying about keeping the trigger down.

When you’ve burned through your paper, or just need to swap out to another grit, belt changes are simple. The Ryobi cordless Belt Sander features a tool-free belt change system for convenience. Simply flip up the gray lever at the front side of the tool to release the belt tension. It then comes on and off quickly and easily without the need for a tool.

While it doesn’t look like the Ryobi PDS101 Cordless Belt Sander has arrived at your local Home Depot quite yet, we expect it soon. It will come as a bare tool, along with a 60-grit paper belt, an 80-grit belt, and a 120-grit belt. Ryobi packages it all up with their 3-year warranty for $79.
