When using an orbital sander, you want something that has the power and flexibility to help you finish your automotive work quickly and without swirls. This might be where the Ingersoll Rand 5100 Series random orbital sanders come in. We take a look at how these new air sanders match up against the 4100 Series.

The 5100 Series by Ingersoll Rand adds a little more power over the IR 4100 Series orbital sanders. You get an increase to 0.22 kW from those 0.20 kW models. Compared to other types of sanders, these tools look like they have enough to do the job well—and quickly.

You also get more options—the real selling point for the Ingersoll Rand 5100 Series Random Orbital Sanders. Available with either a 3/16-inch orbit or a 3/32-inch orbit, you can really fit the needs of a variety of automotive sanding applications. Additionally, configurations include the choice between a 5-inch or 6-inch pad. You can also pick a vinyl or hook and loop pad depending on your intended use or medium.

Many orbital sanders leave swirl patterns on the surface after use, which can be a drawback. Ingersoll Rand claims that the 5100 Series sander produces a fine, swirl-free finish on most surfaces, including wood and fiberglass. It produces a maximum free speed of 12,000 revolutions per minute to sand efficiently.

While no prices are listed on their website or any retailers at the time of writing this article, previous orbital sanders from Ingersoll Rand retail between $100 and $200 or so. For a quick comparison, the list price on the 4151 is $278 while we’re told the retail on the 5151-6 is $319. That’s about a $40 premium. We expect to see actual prices to be a bit less than this from authorized dealers. These sanders come with a 1-year warranty.
